Assam Celebrates Kati Bihu with Traditional Ritual
Assam, October 18, 2026: Assam is celebrating Kati Bihu, one of its three major agricultural festivals, with traditional rituals and prayers. Deeply connected with the agricultural culture of the state, the festival holds special significance in the lives of farmers.
Observed during the Assamese month of Kati, the festival is also known as Kongali Bihu. During this period, paddy plants begin to grow in the fields, while farmers’ granaries often remain nearly empty. Therefore, the festival symbolises scarcity and the hope for a prosperous harvest.
On this occasion, people across Assam light earthen lamps in their courtyards, near Tulsi plants and in paddy fields. Farmers also light lamps placed on bamboo poles in their fields, praying for healthy crops and protection from pests.
Kati Bihu reflects Assam’s rich cultural heritage and the close relationship between people and nature. The festival highlights the importance of agriculture and the contributions of farmers to society. Through its traditional customs and prayers, Kati Bihu continues to preserve Assamese culture and strengthen community bonds.
